Motocross Helmets -- Not Just for Motocross!
Motocross helmets came out of the sport of Motocross -- a sport wherein motorcycles raced on artificial loose dirt circuits. Such circuits were constructed with many corners and steep bumps from which riders launch themselves high into the air. Another variation of the sport dispensed entirely with the racing and emphasized acrobatic moves with one's dirt bike. In short, falls were the norm, and thus, helmets were essential.
But not just any ordinary helmet, oh no… the riders wanted their helmets to be lightweight and aerodynamic, in addition to being protective. Thus, a specific helmet, associated with the motocross sport, developed. Something else developed in the design of motocross helmets: fashion. The helmets came out with varying colors and color patterns, and pretty soon, even bicycle helmets were following the trend, though bicycle helmets only covered
the head and not the face, as motocross helmets do. Now, we see ordinary motorcycle riders wearing motocross type helmets.
There are also youth motocross helmets available. In the beginning motocross helmets came only from Bell, Arai and Shoei. But now, many more manufacturers are joining the fray, most likely because of the demand brought about by the "fashion" factor. There are a lot of brands and styles to choose from. But in all this, we should not forget the reason for these helmets: to protect our head and face. In selecting which motocross helmet to buy, we should make sure that the one we choose is not only fashionable, but also protective.
